This is actually more for myself than anyone else. See, if I don't make a list of what I want and prioritize, then I usually end up spending a lot of money on impulse purchases, which probably isn't the best way to spend my money. I set up a wishlist for myself on the Chapters/Indigo website for the same reason. Anyway, my list, somewhat in order of priority, is:
- Avs Around Town Calendar: hopefully I will be able to get a money order sometime on Monday so I can order it!
- earmuffs: it's brutally cold here, and the chill is the worst in my ears
- Sports Night dvd boxset: I don't know why, but the idea of the show has intrigued me ever since I saw the boxset
- World's Greatest Hockey Hits cd: yeah, I pretty much just want this for the HNIC theme, but I still want it, nonetheless
- hockey player prints: they've got the unframed prints available through the NHL online team stores now, and they're only twenty something dollars each for the 8x12 size!! I think I want the Sakic, Roy, Yzerman, and even Cujo (it's really aesthetically pleasing) ones...
Notice that I don't have any anime stuff on here? That's because anime is already my first spending priority, so I don't have to worry about forgetting to buy that! Also notice how sportscentric the list is? Hockey has made me more interested in sports in general, although I probably won't ever be as crazy about any other sport as hockey--for one thing, my wallet couldn't take it! =Þ
But I also want to start saving some money for a short term mission trip in the summer, so I guess all these things are going to be on my list for a while. Ah well, I need to learn some discipline when it comes to spending anyway...Speaking of which, I think I'd better transfer some money to my savings account now, otherwise I'm going to end up spending it all. ^^;;
Well, yesterday I was supposed to start catching up on my work, but that didn't happen at all. I got up around 12:30pm, went on the net for a while, then remembered my phone and turned it on to find that I had a message. My friend had called the night before, inviting me to have lunch with her and some high school friends the next (that is, yesterday, Friday). Luckily they weren't supposed to meet until 1:15pm, otherwise I would've missed it. As it was, I really rushed to get ready so I wouldn't be late. Surprisingly, I actually ended up being the first one to arrive.
Anyway, we went to some Italian place on Bloor St., and it was pretty good. After lunch they all came over to my place and we just sat around my room talking and laughing a lot. ^_^ They stayed until around 6:00pm.
Right after that I rushed off to the UTARPA (anime club) showing, and I was there for a couple of hours before I rushed back to res keep my promise to watch a movie with my suitemates. They rented "About a Boy" and even though I watched it in theatres this past summer, it was still fun to watch it again.
It's really important to take time out to spend with friends, so even though I didn't accomplish anything in terms of school work (well, I managed to do some Japanese homework while I was at UTARPA), I wouldn't do anything differently.
After four months I've finally been "inspired" by a lecture!! I suppose I was spoiled last year in my EAS 102 class, when there was one superlative lecture on average in a month. Anyway, it was actually an enlightening half lecture.
See, the first hour of the lecture the prof had to cover the stuff on Wordsworth that he wasn't able to finish last week, and well, you'll remember my feelings on Wordsworth--hate him! So yeah, I was pretty much going in and out on that part of the lecture, but after the break he started talking about Emma (by Jane Austen) and I didn't need to finish my Vector bar to keep awake for that!
He talked about the narrative techniques Austen used, like the internal focalizer and free indirect discourse, and how those techniques were essential to the meaning of the book. I can't possibly summarize his lecture properly, so I'm not going to try, but suffice to say, it was so intriguing that it made and makes me want to read the whole book over again, paying minute attention to the focalizer and type of discourse! I even want to try to jump ahead and look for examples of irony and figure out the significance of puzzles and riddles in the story, which is part of what he (my prof) is supposed to talk about next week!
Unfortunately, I suspect it would take a really long time to reread and examine Emma in as close detail as I would like. It's too bad I couldn't take just one or two courses a year and really be able to put all my energy into those two courses. That would be so awesome; I'd probably feel enlightended/inspired most of the time, rather than just once in a while. =Þ
On Thursday I got some junk mail from Sports Illustrated, offering me a corporate rate for a year's subscription to SI. Now, I can understand why I'd get mail from SI--I've got a subscription to the Hockey News, after all, so one might think I'm interested in sports in general--but I really wonder why they'd offer me a corporate discount?
Unless I'm being naive and "corporate rate" is just another trick to make you think that you're getting a really great and special offer or something.
