GRRRRRRRRRRRR...I'm so upset! Only 52% of eligible voters in Ontario voted today! 52%!! That's horrible! How can people be so apathetic? Almost everyone complains about the state of affairs at some point or another--some with more passion than others--so why is it that when given a chance to do something about the way things are run, half of the people don't even make use of that opportunity. Opportunity, I say, and responsibility. (Sorry, that was SO trite. ^^;;)
Anyway, I still have a lot to learn about elections and voting. This discusssion just came up on tv, and now I'm wondering about it too: are we supposed to vote based on party, or individual candidates? I just assumed that you would vote by party, since it's the parties that determine policies, right? But when I think about it from another angle, doesn't it make more sense to vote for the candidate whom you think is best able to represent your interests? Now that I've got this thought in my head, the Star article a couple of weekends ago where someone mentioned that last election they voted for the Liberal candidate even though they supported the PC policies, because the candidate in question had voted in favour of some PC policy-thing, even though the Liberals' official stance was to oppose the bill or whatever. Hmmmmmmm..... I guess this is something I had better learn before the next election rolls around. ^^;;
For this election, at any rate, at least I did read Takhar's stuff, and I did feel like he was a good person to vote for, even if I failed to read the stuff about all the other candidates. ^^;; *sigh* All I really knew was that I preferred the Liberal platforms on education, taxes, and whatnot over the Tories. I mean, I know that there are quite a few problems with McGuinty's education plan as well, but at least he's not planning on giving subsidies or tax breaks to parents to send their kids to private schools. In my mind, that's just the first step towards privatizing education, and I'm a firm believer in public education. (Did that make any sense?)
So yeah, I'm glad that the Liberals have carried the day: 72 seats Liberal, 24 PC, and 7 NDP is quite a statement. Now all we can do is hope that McGuinty makes good on his promises.
I wonder what the federal election is going to be like? Soemthing else for me to look into....
