All for the Best!

I was a bit disappointed when my friend told me she wouldn't be sleeping over at my res Friday night, but in the end it all worked out well. My suitemate and I went out for dinner at the Sushi Inn after her mid-term (an exam on a Friday night? brutality!). On the way to dinner we noticed that Spider was playing at 10:25pm, and since we both had wanted to see it since the film festival, we decided--just like that--to watch it after dinner.

So we sat at the sushi bar and both ordered salmon bento boxes. It was pretty cool, seeing as I've never sat at the sushi bar before. The guy who was making sushi with unagi took the unagi out from the toaster oven with his bare hands. I wonder if it was really that cool? Shouldn't it have hurt? And two of the sushi chefs (one of which was the unagi guy) started fooling around, hitting each other and stuff. It was quite amusing. My suitemate and I wondered if maybe they were related.

Anyway, after dinner we did indeed watch Spider, and it turned out to be pretty good. Like Memento and a lot of the stuff that's been discussed in my English courses, the movie had a lot to do with memory, reality, and the reliability of the focalizer (person from whose point of view the movie/book is in). Maybe I'm a nerd for thinking this way, but I've always found it really cool when a theme from my classes shows up in other things, like current news or entertainment.

Spider would be another good movie to rent on dvd and to watch and discuss with friends, I think. Although, it wouldn't be as good as Memento because "reality" and the plot aren't nearly as clear-cut as Memento. In Memento even though there was some ambiguity about the reality of the protagonist's history, there was sufficient evidence from other characters to draw reasonable conclusions. In Spider, though, the only person's view which is presented is the protagonists, so it's really all about interpretation on the viewer's part, with little solid fact one way or the other. I don't think I would pay to see it in theatres again, but I would like to watch it again at some point, I believe.
