There Are Some Crazy People Out There

Well, the auction for the Papal Mass Pass, serial #100 has ended. Can you believe it sold for $112.50 US?!?! I can't. That's really ridiculous.

I think a bunch of people must have taken the cue from this guy, because now there are three or four passes up for grabs on eBay. These ones aren't exactly special numbers though, so I don't know if they'll really sell. I mean, there are, at the very least, some 26,000 passes out there, so why would people pay more than the original selling price for one that's just got some random serial number? (shakes head)

Anyway, I watched MIB II with my friend Greg today. It wasn't bad. Not as good as the first one (which I want to watch again, since I really don't remember what happened in the original), but not a stinker like, say Star Wars Episode II. The dog, Frank, and the worm guys were kind of overplayed, and, well, the movie just wasn't as fun as I thought it'd be.

There was, however, a cool animation short, "The Chubb Chubbs" that played before the movie. Funny, but I remember that more fondly than the movie. ^^;; Not exactly a glowing recommendation, is it?

Maybe I'm just picky, but there aren't a lot of movies, that I really feel the desire to watch on the big screen, coming out. The next movie I'm really waiting for is Lord of the Rings, and, um, Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter is coming out before that, but I'm actually looking forward to the fifth book (due out in September, I believe) more than the second movie. Sure, the last two Matrix movies will be released next year, but, I wasn't all that gung-ho about the original, so even though I'd probably watch them in theatres, I'm not exactly dying from anticipation here.

Speaking of the Matrix...

(Ending spoiler contained below--although I doubt this is necessary, because, who hasn't seen the Matrix by now?)

We watched the Matrix in fellowship (also known as youth group) for a movie and discussion night not too long after it was released for home theatres. Since I had already seen it, I lay down and slept for most of the movie. I woke up just in time for the ending, though. When Trinity was straddling Neo's body, telling him that he couldn't be dead, I sat up, clued into whar was going on, and blurted out the first thing that came to my mind: "it's called denial." Unfortunately that rather wrecked the suspenseful atmosphere I'm sure the director was trying to create, although my comment did get a few laughs.

I think I'm just naturally contrary. Everyone was raving about how great the movie was, so I just had to find something to criticize. It's not that I think I'm wrong for disliking the fact that they threw in a totally gratuitous love interest (Trinity) into an otherwise great movie, it's that I know I wouldn't make such a big deal out of it if I wasn't purposely looking for stuff about the movie to dislike, y'know? I mean, I gloss over all sorts of horrendously problematic aspects of movies that I simply liked, but I nitpick about a movie that I did actually enjoy just because I feel that I should be different and not just join the hordes of raving Matrix fans. It's okay if I like movies with mixed, or even negative reviews (although I'm more likely to agree with negative reviews than not), but heaven forbid that I should love incredibly popular movies. Lord of the Rings, of course, being the main exception. I guess it's a kind of snobbery, as if I'm so distinct, apart, separate from the tastes of the masses. =Þ Utter rubbish, of course. I'm just as swayed by popular culture as everybody else, even if I'm not a big fan of pop or boy bands, etc. etc.
