Less is More

Woah. I went to a softball game today (well, yesterday) in which the home team, Moment, outnumbered the visiting team, WIRED, by a ratio of two to one. Moment had twelve players, and WIRED only had six--less than half a team! Even the spectators outnumbered the players from WIRED: there were seven of us!

Being short two fielders, I expected WIRED to be hopelessy outscored as Moment would be able to hit all the holes and rack the runs up like mad. They didn't though. The final score was 26 to 15, for WIRED.

I took it as an illustration as to how sometimes less is more. It wasn't that the other team was bad or anything (although they did have one guy who had never played softball before in his life--he'll learn this summer, I guess!), more that the WIRED players who were there were all pretty good, or at least decent. Three of the guys could really crank the ball out, the other two guys and the single girl weren't as experienced or powerful, but they generally made it to base.

At any rate, it was nice to see the "underdog" win for once! I mean, Carolina lost to Detroit in hockey, and South Korea got knocked out of the final three for soccer, so at least I've seen one sports game this summer in which the team not expected to ultimately win did! =Þ
