About A Boy

Woah, I go from hockey to movies. Never fear (although maybe you should...), however, the Stanely Cup Finals begin on Tuesday! Now that BOTH of my teams have been knocked out--Colorado's loss of 7-0 was just too depressing for me to even write about on Friday--I am cheering for the 'Canes.

I know I said that I didn't think either Carolina or Toronto would have a chance against Colorado or Detroit, but I'm really bitter about that game seven, so I'm going to cheer for the 'Canes anyway. xP Really though, Shanahan was standing in front of the net! He was holding onto the centre of the crossbar, so what else was Roy supposed to do except push him out? That was absolutely the worst penalty I have ever seen. Detroit TOTALLY did not deserve that seventh goal. Canadian Olympian or not, I'm not particularly happy with Shanahan right now. GRRRR!!!

Enough of that, though. I went to see "About A Boy" today, and it was pretty good. Not the type of movie that you really need to see on the big screen--then again, what chick flick is?--but it wasn't a waste of money. ^_^ Sure, some parts dragged, and I thought the ending was a bit cheesy, but overall, I thought it was a pretty good film. I was a bit worried because I'd heard mixed reviews, but it turned out alright.

One of the reviews that I heard commented on how this film revealed that *gasp* Hugh Grant can act! Now, I've never had anything against Hugh Grant myself, but I do agree that his performance in "About A Boy" was about as good as I've seen yet. Then again, I haven't watched a Hugh Grant movie in a LONG time, so I don't know how trustworthy my judgement is. =Þ

So if you want a break from all the special effects laden action, sci-fi/fantasy, etc. movies, go ahead, watch "About A Boy." It really is about a boy and his relationship with Hugh Grant, which was nice, because I'm not a big fan of sappy romances, in films, that is. I'm fine with books, but movies just don't hold my interest. Yes, I know I'm strange.

On a slightly related, but not really, note, I saw a preview for "The Hulk" before the show today. What can I say? It doesn't look all that exciting. Of course, I've never been a big Hulk fan, so I guess I'm biased. Still, I've got to wonder, what's with all the print media (book, comic book) movie adaptations recently? I mean, the movies are generally pretty decent, but it's a rather sad statement on the creativity of the industry, don't you think?

Off on another tangent, what's with the weird mixes of previews nowadays? I mean, when I watched Ep. 2 I saw previews for "Like Mike" (what looks to be a sickeningly sappy and trite movie about a boy who finds shoes with the initials "MJ" and magically gains the basketball skills of Michael Jordan and gets recruited on an NBA team) along with "Minority Report." Looks like filmmakers are really trying to cater to diverse audiences nowadays. Even "About A Boy" had previews for "Like Mike" (did I mention Lil Bow Wow is the lead? *gag*) along with "The Bourne Identity." Very strange. I guess it's been like that for a while though. I mean, I remember seeing previews for "Osmosis Jones" along with...some adult suspense type movie when I watched "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within." Don't think I'll ever understand the movie industry.

So there you go. If you don't watch "About A Boy" in the theatres, at least check it out on DVD/VHS. I liked it, so maybe you will too. ^_^
