Writer's block has been made immeasurably more frustrating through electronics. In the good old days of pen and paper, even when all your words just seemed to come out wrong, at least you had the crossed out sentences and phrases on the paper to prove that you had actually tried to get something accomplished. With computers, modern word processors, and even bloggers such as this, however, anything that isn't meant to be part of the finished product is simply deleted or backspaced away. The end result, of course, is that writer's block leaves you with a blank screen (rather than sheets filled with crossed out lines) and the feeling of having accomplished absolutely nothing.
Or you can force yourself to write without deleting and learn to live with whatever junk gets transferred from your brain through your fingers and the keyboard and onto your screen. Then you'd have something like this journal entry today. ^^;; Argh! It's so frustrating that it's only been two days since I wrote my goals for this blog and I'm already running out of things to say! Is it that I lead a boring life, that I lack creativity, or what?! How do people do this, update their bloggers daily, without lapsing into utter triviality or mundanity, or raving insanity?
I guess it's just a matter of discipline, something that I haven't had much experience with, unfortunately. Ever since university started I have discovered that I am extremely undisciplined and very lazy. It's a sad thing really, even sadder that I don't care enough to try to change. The only paper that I wrote more than a day or two in advance of the deadline was my first paper for East Asian History, since then everything's been done at the absolute last minute; I've pulled at least three all-nighters, if not more. Other than improving my writing ability, hopefully this blog will help me to develop some sort of discipline.
